My Portfolio
New Masters
Published by Image Comics and created in deep collaboration with my brother, Shof Coker, New Masters is a love letter to where I grew up: Lagos. The graphic novel follows the exploits of a family of outcasts struggling to make ends meet in the shadow of a seemingly benevolent, colonizing alien race.
“This book feels like a heightened and futuristic version of what many cities in Africa are like”
The Lamplighters League
The Lamplighters League is a turn-based tactical RPG that immerses players in a pulp-noir-infused alternate 1930s world. Players take control of a rag-tag group of misfits and outcasts who have been recruited by an enigmatic figure to stop an ancient evil cult from taking over the world.
As a key part of a four-person narrative team, I worked diligently to develop a diverse cast of characters into relatable people with depth, flaws, and distinct personalities. My contributions to the project included:
Player character backstory development and worldbuilding
Writing and implementing dialogue and barks for player characters, enemy NPCs, and bosses
Writing and implementing game lore, GM-style environmental text
Writing and implementing Objective and Mission strings
Preparing scripts and assisting voice-over artists in the recording booth to ensure performances aligned with our narrative vision
“The Lamplighters League’s opening mission confirms it’s a hot GOTY contender”
Buckhead
Published by Boom! Studios, Buckhead is a middle-grade graphic novel created in collaboration with artist George Kambadais.
The story follows Toba, a young Nigerian immigrant who moves to the sleepy Pacific Northwest town of Buckhead, WA. Toba soon discovers his new home is not what it seems and that there are strange and dangerous forces at work in the town. The comic explores themes of identity, belonging, and loss.
“I love the tension throughout the story and the brilliant way Shobo is able to capture the imagination of the reader with the themes and characters”
Outcasts of Jupiter
Self-published via Kickstarter in 2014, Outcasts of Jupiter was created in collaboration with my brother and artist Shof Coker. The graphic novel marked my entry into the world of comics and followed a group of outcasts on a mission to rescue one of their own from a mysterious Morrocan castle known as The Burj.
The successful Kickstarter campaign raised over $14,000 from 471 backers. Physical copies of the book were printed along with t-shirts, posters, postcards, and figurines.
“Shobo is thoughtful, methodical, and a consummate team player. He has strong narrative instincts and backs them up with a thorough, considered approach that puts the player’s experience first. ”
“Shobo is an excellent writer and storyteller with an impressive talent for world building. His work helped bring our game to life, adding nuance and depth to areas that needed them. ”
